The Anderton Boat Lift

Heritage sites and places to visit in Mid-Cheshire

The Anderton Boat Lift is situated off Marbury Road, Anderton, and Northwich. By Rail, Railway Stations are at Cuddington, Acton Bridge, Hartford, Greenbank, Northwich and Lostock Gralam. Telephone British Rail, Chester (01244) 40170 for timetable information. By Bus, Regular buses run to and from the area. Telephone Cheshire Bus Line on Chester (01244) 602666 or Northwich (01606) 815050 for details.

Both the original 1875 Lift and the present version were used extensively by commercial traffic and the principal cargoes carried were coal, china clay, salt, manufactured goods, including china ware and agricultural produce. Sadly, trade on inland waterways declined dramatically in the 1950's and the use of the lift by commercial traffic effectively ended by the mid 1960's. The increase in the use of inland waterways for pleasure boating after the end of commercial traffic gave the lift a new, but short, lease of life, as it was the navigational link joining the River Weaver to the rest of the inland waterways system and allowed visitors access to one of the most beautiful parts of England, the Weaver Valley.
